Enrolment
New Reception children can be enrolled at school soon after their 4th birthday. This helps with planning for an effective transition program. Children are not able to attend school until they have had their 5th birthday. We have 4 intakes of reception children each year at the beginning of each term.

Children transferring from other schools may begin at anytime during the school year. Enrolment and personal information forms are available from the front desk. Please contact the school if you require enrolment forms to be faxed or mailed to you

Reception students:

The school works very closely with the Hawthorndene Kindergarten to ensure a smooth and easy transition between the kindergarten and the more structured approach in Reception. Our two Reception teachers and their classes visit the kindy on a weekly basis on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We also provide four school visits in the last four weeks of the term before a student begins school. Each visit is longer than the previous one. Parental Involvement

There are a number of ways in which parents may choose to be involved in the school.

  • Classroom involvement- individual teachers may suggest reading stories to groups of children, playing games, joining in with art activities or cooking, hearing children read, helping children with writing, accompanying the class on an excursion, in the Learning Assistance Program. We value any assistance that parents can give.
  • School involvement - parents help in the Resource Centre, with sport, drama, the grounds and a variety of activities or projects that arise during the year.
  • This group meets once a month, on a Friday morning at 9am and provides an opportunity for parents, grandparents etc. to play an active role in the school community and to gain an informed insight into the activities and future development of the school. P&F is also a great forum for developing friendships and maintaining valuable parent networks. Regular coffee mornings are also held to help nurture these networks and sense of community.
The Annual General Meeting is usually held in week 1 of Term 1 where all executive positions are declared vacant. Members are welcome to join at any time throughout the year and younger children are also welcome at meetings. An optional free crèche is provided by enthusiastic Year 7 students in an adjacent room.
P&F are involved in many and varied activities some of which raise funds like the regular Food Days and Cake Days. Other activities include Kids Eat Fresh where a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables is prepared and provided to each class every Wednesday. P&F also support many other school activities such as Book Week, Come Out festivities, Walk Safely to School Day and Sports Day. Money raised by P&F goes towards providing a variety of resources to students and staff and assists in providing a great learning environment for our students.
  • School Council - This is an active body of interested parents and staff working together for the good of all children and the school generally. Meetings are held monthly. Parents willing to stand are asked to nominate and elections are held at the Annual General Meeting in March.

The responsibility of the Council is:

  • to advise the Principal
  • to oversee the school’s finances
  • the development and maintenance of the school grounds.
  • Sub-Committees of School Council - parents are welcome to join any of the following:
    • Sport
    • Education
    • OSHC
    • Finance
    • Buildings & Grounds
    • Fundraising

Sun Smart

Our school is an official "Sun Smart Site"
A policy operates throughout the year when children are required to wear broad-brimmed “digger” or legionnaire style hats when in the yard during the school day. Teachers provide time for children to apply sunscreen before going out to play at lunchtime. The Parents and Friends group provides each class with a bottle of 30+ sunscreen. As part of the curriculum students are informed as to why sun care is so important and what steps can be taken for protection.
